Beauty Talk Session with G&G: Lip fillers 101

Every time we look in the mirror, something about our physical features dissatisfies us. It’s human nature. All in your mind… But there are some things that repeatedly irk us, all. the. time. Sometimes, it’s not about whether it’s irking us but it’s because we have stressful busy lives where we’re unable to take care of ourselves resulting in the ageing of our skin. Enter, beauty treatments.

Today, Grace & Glamour talks about lip fillers.

Lip fillers are a popular treatment among both men and women who are looking to enhance their lips’ appearance. Many people choose lip fillers to achieve a more youthful look, enhance their natural lip shape, smooth out fine lines and wrinkles, or add volume to thin or asymmetrical lips. Grace & Glamour beauticians compiled a Lip Fillers 101 guide. We give you the most comprehensive guide possible so your basic concerns can be addressed. After this, we hope you can decide whether to tick the box or cross it off your beauty trial list.

What are lip fillers?

Lip fillers are a type of cosmetic treatment that involves injecting a substance into the lips to add volume and improve how their lips look like. They are typically made of hyaluronic acid, a natural substance found in the body that helps to maintain skin hydration and elasticity. When injected into the lips, it can help to create a fuller, plumper look.

How do lip fillers work?

Lip fillers work by adding volume and definition to the lips. The filler substance is injected into the lips using a fine needle, and it helps to smooth out fine lines and wrinkles, enhance the lip shape, and add volume to thin or asymmetrical lips.

What is the procedure like?

The procedure for lip fillers typically takes less than an hour to complete and is performed on an outpatient basis. A topical numbing cream or local anaesthesia may be applied to the lips to minimize discomfort during the injection process. The Grace & Glamour beautician assigned to you will then inject the filler substance into the lips using a fine needle. Most people experience some mild swelling and bruising after the procedure, but these side effects typically resolve within a few days.

How long do lip fillers last?

As per Grace & Glamour beauty experts, the results of lip filler treatments can last anywhere from six months to a year, depending on the type of filler used and the individual’s metabolism.

What are the different types of lip fillers?

Hyaluronic Acid Fillers

Hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers are the most popular type of lip filler. HA is a naturally occurring substance found in the body that helps to maintain skin hydration and elasticity. HA fillers are made of a gel-like substance that is injected into the lips to add volume, smooth out fine lines and wrinkles, and create a more defined shape. These fillers are temporary and can last anywhere from six months to a year. Examples of HA fillers include Restylane, Juvederm, and Belotero.

Calcium Hydroxylapatite Fillers

Calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA) fillers are made of tiny calcium microspheres suspended in a gel. They are made of a substance similar to the mineral found in bones. When injected into the lips, the CaHA particles stimulate the production of collagen, which helps to create long-lasting volume and definition. CaHA fillers can last up to 18 months. They are thicker than hyaluronic acid fillers and are often used to create a more defined shape in the lips. Examples of CaHA fillers include Radiesse and Radiance.

Poly-L-Lactic Acid Fillers

Poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) fillers are made of a biocompatible substance that stimulates collagen production in the body. When injected into the lips, the PLLA particles create a natural-looking, long-lasting plumpness. They are typically used to add volume to thin lips over time. These fillers typically require multiple treatment sessions, but the results can last up to two years. Examples of PLLA fillers include Sculptra.

Autologous Fat Transfer

Autologous fat transfer involves taking fat from another part of the body, such as the thighs or abdomen, and injecting it into the lips. This procedure is typically performed under local anaesthesia and can provide long-lasting results. However, it is a more invasive procedure than other lip fillers and may require downtime for recovery. This procedure can create a natural-looking, long-lasting plumpness. But at the same time, not all of the transferred fat may survive, which can lead to uneven or lumpy results.

Polymethyl Methacrylate Fillers

Polymethyl methacrylate fillers are made of a synthetic substance that is not naturally found in the body. They are typically used to create a more permanent result, as the substance cannot be absorbed by the body. Polymethyl methacrylate fillers require a more involved injection process and are not recommended for first-time lip filler patients.

Permanent Fillers

Permanent fillers are made of synthetic materials that are designed to provide long-lasting results. These fillers are typically not recommended for use in the lips due to the risk of complications and the potential for permanent results that cannot be adjusted. Examples of permanent fillers include silicone and Artefill.

The right type of filler for you will depend on your specific goals, concerns, and medical history. It’s important to discuss the different types of fillers with Grace & Glamour’s experienced aesthesticians and make an informed decision about which filler is right for you.

Who is a good candidate for lip fillers?

Good candidates for lip fillers are individuals who are looking to enhance the appearance of their lips, have realistic expectations for the results, and are in good overall health. It’s important to discuss any medical conditions, allergies, or medications with our Grace & Glamour beauty treatment providers before undergoing lip filler treatment.

What are the risks associated with lip fillers?

While lip fillers are generally considered safe, there are some risks associated with the procedure, such as allergic reactions, infection, and uneven or lumpy results. It’s important to choose an experienced and qualified treatment provider for lip filler treatments to minimize these risks and ensure the best possible results.
