Hair Colouring Catastrophes and How to Avoid Them & Reverse Them

Colouring one’s hair can be a great way to make a bold statement or simply change up one’s look, but it can also come with some serious consequences. Maydays of hair colouring is a term our Grace & Glamour pros use to describe the problems that can arise when colouring hair. Some of the most common maydays that occur when it comes to hair colouring include:

Dull and Dry Hair from using the wrong product

Many people make the mistake of using the wrong colour product for their hair. The chemicals used in hair colouring processes can strip away natural oils, leaving the hair dry and brittle. Colouring or bleaching hair can also damage the hair shaft, making it more prone to breakage and split ends.  Especially, for frequent hair colouring enthusiasts and those who use permanent dyes.

At Grace & Glamour, we always suggest that for those who colour their hair, it is important to use a colour-safe shampoo and conditioner, a weekly deep conditioning treatment, additionally, using a heat protectant before styling and avoiding excessive heat to keep hair healthy. It is also important to use professional hair colouring products and to have a Grace & Glamour colourist who is familiar with your hair type and colouring needs.

Colouring too Dark

Colouring your hair too dark can be a major problem as it is difficult to fix or reverse. It can make your hair look brassy or too unnatural and can make the person appear older. This can occur when a person uses a colour that is too intense or has an undertone that is too dark for their complexion. Dark shades can be hard to lighten back to their original colour hence leading to expensive treatments and multiple trips to the salon. Our take? Given the hassle, Grace & Glamour team highly recommends being mindful of the colour shade you are selecting and consulting a professional hair stylist before committing to a particular colour. Finally, always use only professional-grade products.

Colour Banding

Colour banding is a problem that occurs when you have used more than one colour and it doesn’t blend properly resulting in stripes or bands of colour. It is also caused by the hair not being evenly saturated with colour, either due to insufficient mixing of the colouring product or due to the application of colour in a manner that causes it to be applied in stripes. Colour banding can be especially noticeable in lighter colours, where the unevenness is more obvious. Thorough mixing and even application over the entire head can help prevent colour banding. Our Grace & Glamour experts agree that using an applicator brush or comb can help in this. However, if colour banding does occur, it can be corrected by performing a colour correction procedure, which involves re-colouring the hair to even out the colour.

Fading

Fading can occur when the wrong products are used or when you don’t look after your colour properly. This can be especially noticeable if the colour was applied especially dark or bright. Fading can be caused by a number of factors, including sun exposure, shampoos and conditioners, swimming in chlorinated water, and even heat-styling products. Other causes can include the hair’s natural growth cycle, as the cuticle at the end of the hair shaft is pushed upwards, revealing lighter-coloured hair underneath. The effectiveness of a colour can also depend on the quality of the dye used and Grace & Glamour pros recommend the use of quality hair products to avoid exposing the hair to too much sunlight and heat. It is also important to keep the hair well-moisturized.

Uneven Colour

Uneven colour arising from hair colouring is usually caused by factors such as poor application techniques, using the wrong colour for the desired result, product build-up, or using too much of the colour product. When applying hair dye use of the right amount of product and even coating of the hair is desirable. This will ensure that the colour is even and not patchy. It is also important to use the right colour for the desired result. For example, dark brown hair will require a darker colour than light brown hair. Product build-up can be prevented by using the right amount of product and washing the hair regularly with a clarifying shampoo to remove any build-up. Finally, using too much dye can cause the colour to be too light or too dark in certain areas. To avoid this, our Grace & Glamour team advocates using the correct amount of colour and its even application.
